What Are ICT Killzones?
If you've spent any time in the ICT (Inner Circle Trader) or SMC (Smart Money Concepts) community, you've heard the word "killzone." But most traders don't truly understand what it means or why it matters.
A killzone is a specific time window during the trading day when institutional order flow is at its highest. These are the windows when banks, hedge funds, and market makers are actively placing and filling large orders β which means the most reliable price action setups form during these windows.
Trading outside killzones is like fishing in an empty lake. You might get lucky occasionally, but the edge simply isn't there.
The Four ICT Killzones
1. Asian Killzone β 8:00 PM to 12:00 AM New York Time (00:00 β 04:00 UTC)
The Asian session is typically the quietest of the four. Tokyo markets are open and there's moderate liquidity, but compared to London and New York, the moves are smaller.
What happens here:
- Price often ranges and consolidates
- Liquidity builds up above and below the range (equal highs and equal lows)
- The high and low of the Asian session become key reference points for the London session
Best use: Don't focus on entries here. Instead, note the Asian session high and low β these are the liquidity pools that London will target. Mark them and watch what price does when it reaches them during the London killzone.
Pairs/Instruments: JPY pairs (USDJPY, GBPJPY), AUD pairs. Gold tends to be quiet but occasionally has setups near end of Asian session.
2. London Open Killzone β 2:00 AM to 5:00 AM New York Time (07:00 β 10:00 UTC)
This is one of the two highest-probability killzones of the day. London opening brings a massive surge in liquidity as European banks come online.
What typically happens:
- Price sweeps liquidity from the Asian session (runs above Asian highs or below Asian lows to grab stop orders)
- After the sweep, a sharp reversal occurs β this is your entry window
- The move initiated in this killzone often runs for 50β100+ pips
Gold (XAUUSD) behavior: London Open is one of the best times to trade gold. Institutional players set the daily directional bias here. If you catch the London open reversal on gold with a solid SMC setup, you often get a clean 50β150 pip move.
The setup to look for:
- Identify the Asian session range
- Watch for price to break above/below that range in the first 30β60 minutes of London
- Wait for the reversal and a strong rejection candle on the 15M or 1H
- Enter in the direction of the reversal with your stop beyond the sweep
3. New York Open Killzone β 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM New York Time (12:00 β 15:00 UTC)
The New York open is arguably the most powerful killzone of the day. When New York comes online, you have both European and American institutions active simultaneously β the highest volume period of the 24-hour cycle.
What typically happens:
- If London established a clear directional move, New York often continues it (trend continuation)
- If London was choppy or ranging, New York can reverse the London move (stop hunting London traders before sending it higher/lower)
- Major US news events (NFP, CPI, FOMC) always release during or near this window β these create explosive moves
Gold behavior at NY Open: XAUUSD reacts heavily to US economic data. The NY open killzone is where you'll see the biggest gold moves of the day. The NeuroMind signal bot is designed to focus heavily on London and NY killzones for this reason.
Risk warning: NY open around news releases is volatile. If there's a high-impact event (check the economic calendar), either wait 15 minutes after the release for the dust to settle, or skip the session entirely if you're not experienced with news trading.
4. London Close Killzone β 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM New York Time (15:00 β 17:00 UTC)
The London close is the least talked about but often presents solid fade setups. As European banks wind down their positions for the day, you often see the opposite of whatever the primary daily move was.
What typically happens:
- If the market was strongly bullish all day, London close can see a pullback as longs are closed
- Price often returns to fill a Fair Value Gap left from the NY open move
- Lower volume means moves can be slower and more range-bound
Best use: Counter-trend scalps and partial profit taking. This isn't the best session for aggressive entries with large stops.
When to Trade Gold (XAUUSD)
Gold responds best during London Open and New York Open killzones. These two windows account for the majority of XAUUSD daily range. Here's a breakdown:
| Killzone | UTC Time | Gold Activity | Quality | |----------|----------|---------------|---------| | Asian | 00:00β04:00 | Low | Fair (for reference only) | | London Open | 07:00β10:00 | High | βββββ | | NY Open | 12:00β15:00 | Very High | βββββ | | London Close | 15:00β17:00 | Medium | βββ |
How NeuroMind Uses Killzones
Our NeuroMind signal bot has session awareness built into its core logic. Here's how:
-
During London and NY killzones: The minimum confluence score required to fire a signal is lower (4 out of 12). The bot is more aggressive because the probability of a clean move is higher.
-
Outside killzones: The minimum score is raised to 8 out of 12. The bot becomes much more selective because off-session signals have a lower win rate statistically.
This dynamic threshold is one of the reasons the bot focuses on quality over quantity β you'll see fewer signals on weekends and during Asian session, and more during the European/American overlap.
Practical Tips for Trading Killzones
1. Mark your killzones on the chart
Before you sit down to trade, draw vertical lines at the start and end of each killzone. Most charting platforms let you set alerts β use them.
2. Don't enter at the very open
The first 5β10 minutes of any session open can be chaotic. Wait for price to make its initial move (the sweep), then look for your setup.
3. If you missed the entry, don't chase
Killzone setups move fast. If price has already moved 80 pips from the setup point, the risk:reward is no longer there. Let it go and wait for the next session.
4. Combine with economic calendar
Always cross-reference killzones with the economic calendar. A London Open killzone on the same day as a UK CPI release is a high-probability event β both are pushing in the same direction.
5. Track your results by session
Keep a trading journal and tag each trade with which killzone it was from. After 50 trades, you'll see which session gives you the best win rate personally. Focus there.
Summary
ICT killzones aren't magic β they're windows where the probability of clean institutional moves is highest. Trade them consistently and you'll immediately improve your entry quality and reduce the amount of choppy, random losses.
The four killzones:
- Asian (00:00β04:00 UTC) β Range building, reference point
- London Open (07:00β10:00 UTC) β Best gold setups, sweep and reversal
- NY Open (12:00β15:00 UTC) β Highest volume, trend continuation or reversal
- London Close (15:00β17:00 UTC) β Fade setups, lower priority
Use the HonestEdge Economic Calendar to combine killzone awareness with upcoming news events. That combination β right time of day plus fundamental catalyst β is where the highest probability setups live.
